CECAMM – new workshops at the Classic Boat Museum

Students from CECAMM, (Centre of excellence for composites, advanced manufacturing and marine),

have participated in three workshops at the Classic Boat Museum.

CECAMM is part of the Isle of Wight College and provides practical engineering skills vital to the maritime industry.

These sessions included our ‘Safety at Sea’ workshop and our ‘Journey into Speed’ workshop (enhanced to incorporate Newton’s laws of motion and even the occasional SUVAT equation - equations of motion with acceleration as a constant). Students competed to make their vessel the fastest and the competition was very hot! (image)

A tailor-made ‘Heritage of the Columbine Building’ workshop was developed for CECAMM in which the students were able to view the current work going on. We would like to record our thanks to staff at Wight Shipyard Co. for helping to organise this part of the workshop. (image)

Organiser and CECAMM Engineering Lecturer James Miller said, ‘Not only did you open my students’ eyes, but you also opened my eyes to the unique maritime heritage of the Island as a whole, and specifically in Cowes. The students have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the key people, especially the women featured in the museum, and the pioneering roles they often played. The entire experience was well-planned, well-delivered, and thoroughly enjoyed by all.’

Ian Vallance, the museum’s Education Officer said, ‘We are looking forward to welcoming the Level 1 and Level 2 engineering students to the museum next term.’
