For the first time since our move across the river, the brand-new education room welcomed its first visitors on May 13th - Year 2 children from Gatton and Lake Primary School. They had presentation on the Titanic, which led to a workshop on boat design and an investigation into some of the artefacts that had been on board at the time of her sinking. The students were also able to examine contemporary newspaper and magazine reports covering the tragedy itself. They explored the museum searching for clues as to why so many people lost their lives in the disaster. Returning to the education room, they worked collaboratively to bring together the evidence they had gathered and compile a comprehensive list of the factors that contributed to the tragedy.
After lunch, the children enjoyed playing with some of the interactive games around the museum, including the bar football table, the knot game, investigating the pulley system and flicking discs through the challenge board. Refreshed and reinvigorated, they then took part in a further workshop on safety at sea. During this session, the students learned about the history of St Catherine's Lighthouse, examined two different lifeboats, discovered the story of Uffa Fox’s airborne lifeboat, and finally took part in a lifejacket and life raft drill.
