Moving the Dolly Varden

The Classic Boat Museum completes its collection with the arrival of the Dolly Varden in the Medina Village

Previously stored in the Belfast Shed in Newport, the long-term plan is to tell her amazing story to visitors

Built in 1872 at J. Samuel White's yard in Cowes, the Dolly Varden is a 146-year-old historic British racing yacht. Originally constructed as an Itchen ferry for Solent fishing, she was later converted into a racing yacht by Richard Grant of the Royal Yacht Squadron. Later acquired by Tom Ratsey, co-founder of the Cowes sailmakers Ratsey and Lapthorne, the 38-foot vessel was used to test new rig designs and sails for J-Class boats. Following decades of racing and extensive modifications to her hull, she eventually fell into disrepair. Saved from destruction, she was brought back to the Isle of Wight and is now in the care of the Classic Boat Museum, which is actively working to conserve and preserve her significant maritime heritage.
